PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Good Tuesday morning everyone!

It’s a quieter start on radar this morning with otherwise partly cloudy skies. We’re even seeing some patchy dense fog inland where we had most of the rain yesterday. We’ll see a similar setup for rain chances again today with inland areas more unsettled into the afternoon compared to the coast today. So if you plan on being around or north of Hwy20 in the Panhandle by lunchtime or into the afternoon, go ahead and bring the umbrella. Those closer to the beaches today will wind up on the drier side again with only a stray shower possible.

Otherwise, we’re waking up quite sultry once again with warm temperatures largely in the 70s. Dress comfortably for another hot and humid day ahead. Slightly breezy southerly winds continue to pump in this tropical air mass, and daytime heating will get highs up to near 90 degrees once again. Heat indices should top out in the mid 90s, unless an afternoon shower or storm can cool you off.

Like yesterday, with more warmth found away from the near 80° Gulf water temperatures in the afternoon, that sets the stage for greater instability 5-10miles away from the coast. When the warm moisture rich air moves over the warming land it rises up, condenses out moisture in the cooler air aloft, and sets the stage for developing showers and storms. It’s a combination of daytime heating and the sea breeze that creates the better rain chances away from the coast.

We’ll see this pattern break down a bit, however, as high pressure aloft moves overhead during the midweek. High pressure brings sinking motion to the atmosphere, and it should be enough to prevent the rising motion needed for storm development. So rain chances will dwindle down to a stray or isolated chance Wednesday through Friday.

Bottom Line…

For today, partly to mostly cloudy skies with better chances at an afternoon storm or two away from the coast. Highs today top out in the upper 80s near 90° with a heat index in the mid to upper 90s. Your 7 Day Forecast has the rain chances diminishing Wednesday through Friday with more heat!
