Danny Murphy has accused Dominic Calvert-Lewin of ‘sulking’ after the penalty controversy surrounding the final England warm-up game for EURO2020 on Sunday.
Gareth Southgate watched his team overcome Romania 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough after a penalty from Marcus Rashford.
But the Three Lions were awarded a second spot-kick when Rashford was substituted and despite Southgate confirming Calvert-Lewin was the designated taker, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson took the kick and had his effort saved by goalkeeper Florin Nita.
Calvert-Lewin has since revealed he allowed Henderson the ball to build confidence for the tournament but Murphy took issue with the gesture in a bizarre rant on TalkSPORT.
The former Liverpool midfielder believes Henderson ‘flexed his muscles’ to take the kick from Calvert-Lewin and warned the Everton striker to ‘be careful’ when considering his place in the squad.
He also suggested Calvert-Lewin did not try to score the rebound after Henderson missed his penalty.
Murphy said: “I couldn’t care less really in a friendly.
“The two penalty takers were off. [Henderson is] the captain. He decided ‘I want to take it’.
“He flexed his muscles [and said] ‘I am the captain and I am going to take it’. Fine. No problem with that.”
Murphy continued: “You have got to be careful. You have a place in the squad and you have to understand what your place is.
“If you see the penalty, when Jordan took the penalty, Calvert-Lewin has got his hands on his hips. He doesn’t go for the rebound because he’s sulking because he didn’t take it.
“He has had a wonderful season but he should be thankful that he is there. He didn’t have a great end to the season.
“You don’t spit your dummy out because your captain is taking the penalty.”
