Albon: “Especially on short run it highlights there’s pace missing”

Alexander Albon had a solid qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. He had to give way to both Racing Point cars, but given his previous qualifications a sixth place is not bad at all. The question is whether he will be able to continue this form in the race.

“Strategy will be a big one,” he said in Red Bull Racing’s online press conference. “It’s not as easy to overtake as at Silverstone. Just the way that the corners are, to stay close in sector three and turn nine into the overtaking positions, the laptime delta to overtake has to be pretty huge. So we will have to be creative with the strategy. I think most of the moves will be done on pitstops.”

To prevent him from having to catch up every time, Albon could qualify a bit better. That’s not so easy with sensitive RB16. He then explains the considerations you have to make in order to be faster during qualifying.

“Of course you try to make the car more comfortable and go after the way you want it to be, but at the same time you have to deal with the car as it is and extract. It’s quite a sensitive car. If it’s in the wind, it feels good, but if it isn’t, it’s quite tricky. That’s that’s the same with any car, but especially on the short run it highlights there’s pace missing.”
