Rory Burns digs in but middle-order collapse leaves England in trouble

A painstaking century spanning 267 balls and more than seven hours by Rory Burns on his return to the team kept alive England’s hopes of emerging from the first Test match with a draw after a serious collapse in the morning saw them lose their first six wickets for 140 in reply to New Zealand’s 379.

Burns, ably supported by Ollie Robinson in a seventh-wicket stand of 63 in 28 overs and then by James Anderson in a last-wicket partnership of 52, was last man out for 132, having scored more than all ten of his team-mates combined in a total of 275, a deficit of 113.
