Beloved author and Syracuse native Eric Carle dies: Syracuse native Eric Carle, the beloved children’s author and illustrator whose classic “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and other works gave millions of kids some of their earliest and most cherished literary memories, died Sunday at age 91. Carle was born in Syracuse to German immigrant parents in 1929.

Accused Skyline killer faces rare murder-by-torture charge: A Syracuse woman accused of torturing a 93-year-old woman to death will publicly face first-degree murder charges in a court appearance this morning. Victoria Afet, 23, was indicted in the past week on charges that she stuffed items down Connie Tuori’s throat to suffocate her during a Feb. 26 attack inside the victim’s 13th floor Skyline apartment.

Should adults be free to sue for long-ago sex abuse? Robert Bender is one of dozens of people who have accused Conrad Mainwaring of abuse, accusations that have brought criminal charges in California and Massachusetts. New York’s laws allow people who were 17 or younger at the time of abuse to sue in civil court. That doesn’t include Bender, though. Since he was 18 at the time of the alleged abuse, he is not able to file suit. Some Albany lawmakers are trying to change that.

Latest vaccine incentive: SUNY scholarship raffle: New York will raffle 50 scholarships to any public university in the state to kids and teenagers who get vaccinated against Covid-19 in the coming weeks. The scholarships will cover full tuition, room and board to any State University of New York, City University of New York or public community college in the state for four years, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Another festival canceled: The Syracuse Polish Festival, a tradition in Syracuse’s Clinton Square each June, has been canceled for the second straight year due to the pandemic.
