Everton vs Sheffield United: Live | Sigurdsson on for Holgate second half

Holgate #Holgate

Fulltime Thoughts – The television coverage concludes with a beautiful shot of the sun setting over Goodison Park, which is an apt way to summarize the game, and the season.

90+4’ – Moss has seen enough and so have we all. Everton lose at home yet again this season, and bid any chances of going to Europe adieu.

90+1’ – Sigurdsson corner, Godfrey header, over.

89’ – With a handful of minutes to go, it’s still the Blades outworking the Blues, and that is the story of the game.Just three minutes to be added on.

81’ – George Baldock booked for the Blades, bringing down DCL. Freekick from the Everton left.Digne’s cross is cleared. Ball comes back to him and he wins a corner this time. Taken short and Bernard crosses in low, cleared.

77’ – Godfrey with the block! McGoldrick controls in the box and shoots from a couple of yards out but the defender slides in well.

76’ – Digne crosses with his right foot, comes to Sigurdsson whose header is nowhere near the goal. We’re going to have a double change, with Bernard and Andre Gomes coming on for James and Doucoure.

73’ – Ben Godfrey decides to take a pop from distance, nowhere near the goal. Camera zooms in on Ancelotti and the veteran Italian is shaking his head.

71’ – Everton corner, cleared. Deep cross into the box won by Keane, but he can’t find Richarlison.

66’ – Two wild challenges from James in a matter of minutes and he is booked now. Showing his frustration here. Blades freekick deep in the Everton left. Blues clear.

61’ – About half an hour left to find two goals.

57’ – There is a sense of urgency in the Everton players right now, but the execution remains.. poor.

54’ – Keane to Sigurdsson through the middle, he finds DCL , shot blocked for a corner. James takes it short, comes to Digne and his cross is wayward.

52’ – Everton corner on the left, inswinger by Sigurdsson is collected easily by Ramsdale.

50’ – Sheffield continuing where they left off, haranguing the Blues into losing the ball in their own half.

46’ – Ancelotti has made a change at the break, with Gylfi Sigurdsson on for Holgate, and a switch to a 4-4-2 now with Sigurdsson and James as wide midfielders.

Halftime Thoughts – The Blues have had chances aplenty to tie up this game but their finishing has let them down, not for the first time.

45+2’ – Keane dink over the backline and Richarlison swings his boot at it and sends it into Row ZZ. Poor. There’s the halftime whistle, and the Blues are laying an egg with Europe at stake. What can Ancelotti tell his troops at the break?

40’ – Double save from Ramsdale!! James cross for Richy, the header is saved at point-blank range by the goalie, rebound falls to DCL who can’t put it past Ramsdale from a yard away. It’s just going to be one of those days isn’t it?

37’ – Chance! Allan with a lovely ball to James who controls beautifully, turns and shoots, corner. Ball from James cleared for another one.Low corner from the Everton right by Digne, cleared by the visitors.

34’ – Save by Pickford! Jebbison got to a poor back pass from Holgate and Jordan Pickford is out smartly to rescue the Blues. There’s Holgate’s customary brainfart-of-the-day.

29’ – McGoldrick shot is blocked by Holgate, rebound falls to Fleck who fires straight at Pickford and he parries away for a corner, that is then cleared by Michael Keane.

26’ – Chris Basham clatters into Digne studs-first and will be booked, after having fouled Richarlison just a couple of minutes ago.

24’ – Coleman receives a high cross in the box, and the ball clears goes off Robinson’s arm but referee Jon Moss is not interested. James takes the corner and it’s overhit. Another wasted chance.

20’ – Digne gets a cross into the box, DCL can get a head to it but no power, Ramsdale collects it.

16’ – Right now it’s all Blades as they’re the ones looking more like a side trying to get to Europe than the hosts.

10’ – Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shot is blocked for a corner. Cleared, falls to Allan at the edge of the box and he fires in a great shot, Aaron Ramsdale parries away very well to concede another corner. This one is too close to the goalie and he claims.

7’ – Didn’t we see this coming. Sheffield United lead after an excellent interplay on the Everton right. 17-year-old Jebbison – making his first Premier League start – stabs home Robinson’s center. Ridiculous, Already-relegated Blades lead early here.

5’ – Looks like more of a back-four here, with Seamus Coleman playing more of a wide midfielder and Mason Holgate at right back behind him.

2’ – The rain is pouring down, should make for a slick playing surface.

1’ – Underway at Goodison Park.

Everton had no favours this weekend from any of their rivals for European spots, with Liverpool grabbing a late win, Tottenham Hotspur cruising against Wolverhampton Wanderers (who the Blues play next), and West Ham United grabbing a late point against Brighton. The Toffees must win today to keep pace with the teams above, and will still remain eighth on goal difference unless they can thrash the Blades by seven or more goals.

Carlo Ancelotti has gone a three-man backline again, with James returning to the starting lineup.

Everton have just three games left to play this season, and recent misdemeanours mean that the Blues will pretty much need to win all three to ensure European competition at Goodison Park this season. Speaking of their home ground, the Blues have managed one league win at the Grand Old Lady in their last ten games, dating back to the beginning of 2021. Shorn of supporters, what can quickly become a bearpit for away sides has become a house of horrors for the Blues as they seem to paralyze at key moments, resulting in dropped points which pretty much explains the team’s current league standing.

Visitors Sheffield United were already relegated what seems like months ago, putting in one of the worst overall performances in the history of the Premier League. Even the departure of manager Chris Wilder, who had been strongly linked with the Everton job after the sacking of Marco Silva, did nothing to spark the side into playing for pride.

The Blades internal issues are of no concern for the Toffees though, who need to sort out their own issues at home because anything less than a win today would pretty much mean the two remaining games are moot and could feasibly even see Everton slip right out of the top ten.

The Blues went to Bramall Lane on Boxing Day 2020 and scraped a narrow 1-0 win thanks to a Gylfi Sigurdsson goal. The Blades have good memories of playing at Goodison, contributing to Silva’s eventual demise after winning 2-0 early in the 2019-20 season.
