Nate McMillan has ‘great deal of respect’ for Russ’ game

With Russell Westbrook one triple-double away from breaking Oscar Robertson’s record, the former MVP continues to get praise from his NBA peers.

Hawks interim head coach Nate McMillan was the latest to compliment Westbrook before facing off with the Wizards on Monday night.

“I have a great deal of respect for Russ and his game,” McMillan told reporters before the game. “He’s a guy that competes every possession on the floor, to be able to set a record like has done, it just shows the energy, the effort, how competitive he is to average a triple-double. I have a great deal of respect for how he plays and how hard he plays.”

McMillan mentioned how he was able to work with Westbrook during the 2012 Olympics when he was an assistant on Mike Krzyzewski’s coaching staff. He also had plenty of battles with Westbrook in the Western Conference when he coached the Trail Blazers during the first four years of Westbrook’s pro career.

Between McMillan’s remarks, comments from Mike Budenholzer, Nick Nurse, Domantas Sabonis and Pascal Siakam, it’s clear Westbrook has the respect of his peers.

All he needs now is one more triple-double to break a record previously thought to be unattainable.
