India records more than 4,000 deaths for a second day
The devastating wave of cases ravaging India shows no sign of abating, with more than 4,000 new deaths recorded for a second day.
On Saturday health officials said the total toll had risen to 242,362. New confirmed cases meanwhile rose by a further 403,378 – close to the all-time record daily rise.
Countries around the globe are sending supplies to try to help India. Overwhelmed hospitals are struggling with a shortage of oxygen and ventilators nationwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is under growing pressure to impose a national lockdown as cases start to spread from state to state and from cities to the countryside.
