‘Drag Race’ star Rosé makes serious leap into music with ‘The Devil in the Details’

Rosé is here to stay. The dynamic and endlessly talented drag superstar took RuPaul’s Drag Race season 13 by storm with charming wit, humbling Scottish pride, fierce looks, endless adaptability, fierce professionalism and undeniable vocal talent.

Although Rosé didn’t take home the crown on last month’s record-breaking finale, that doesn’t mean she’s ready to bow out quietly. She’s just begun.

Rosé is making her mark in the popsphere with the release of her ‘80s glam-inspired debut single “The Devil in The Details,” the first of many solo singles set to be released throughout the year.

That’s not to say that Rosé’s music career has just started: She’s been performing for years as a trained vocalist in New York City and as part of drag queen trio Stephanie’s Child, alongside members Jan Sport and Lagoona Bloo, for years. Rosé’s success as a musician has led to performing on NBC’s The Voice and as a fierce competitor on America’s Got Talent. She even gave us a little taste of what solo Rosé would sound like at the top of this year with a fabulous cover of “Gimme What I Want” by Miley Cyrus. The song already has more than 200,000 streams on Spotify.

“I’ve been hard at work focusing on Stephanie’s Child for several years now, and even today we are writing, creating and planning together as a group with giant plans,” Rosé told In The Know. “But the universe has nudged me into the spotlight for the moment, and I want to take that opportunity to showcase my signature sound and artistry in a way I’ve never really done, because we started Stephanie’s Child almost immediately after I started doing drag.”

“I’ve always wanted to release solo music, and having the platform Drag Race has supplied beneath me led to this being the perfect time,” Rosé continued. “When I returned from filming the season, I sat down to create music, and this is the story and message I felt most persuaded to tell and relay — a story of letting go, and of accepting exactly who you are, no frills. It’s the greatest lesson I learned and what I really took away from my experience on the show.”

“The Devil in The Details” showcases this theme of letting go, as Rosé lets her guard down and welcomes love on the summery pop confessional that sounds as infectious as a Carly Rae Jespen classic.

“‘The Devil in The Details’ was inspired by my turning point on RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Rosé explained. “I had been performing well week after week, and was so committed to delivering a pristine and polished product to Ru and the judges — but in the process, began to lose a unique, vital and vulnerable piece of myself. About halfway through the season, I managed to loosen up and visibly enjoy myself much more, and during one episode, in particular, I finally allowed my true colors to shine through.”

“During the deliberation that both celebrated my imperfections and changed my course on the show, RuPaul proudly remarked, ‘The devil’s in the details!’ I thought, “I’m gonna write a song about this,” she added.

The song offers a more contemporary Top-40 vibe, proving drag superstars can serve up much more than just your typical club affair.

“I am not a drag queen making music. I am a musician who happens to be in drag,” Rosé said.

And that’s true of her first single. It’s got all the fixings of a pure singer-songwriter pop bop — and an unexpected thrilling electro outro to boot. But the song isn’t completely overwhelmed by the camp and catchphrases that usually dominate post-Drag Race originals.

Beyond being a legitimately great release from a Ru girl, “The Devil in the Details” simply represents Rosé’s very real potential to crossover into the mainstream as a superstar pop act.

“The Devil in The Details” is available on Spotify, Apple Music and all streaming services!
