Pundit tells Spurs to go Poch-route by hiring Prem boss

Danny Murphy has told Spurs to go down a similar “route” as they did with Mauricio Pochettino by getting Graham Potter to replace Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new manager after they parted company with Mourinho. He left the week of the Carabao Cup final.

The Londoners started the season strongly as they sat at the top of the Premier League in the early months of the campaign.

But they struggled in the lead up to Mourinho’s departure as they fell out of the top four. They also suffered disappointing exits in the Europa League and FA Cup.

The inexperienced Ryan Mason was chosen to replace the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss on a temporary basis.

Spurs lost at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final to Man City, but they have won their two league games under Mason.

The 29-year-old is not expected to take the job permanently. Potter is among those linked with the vacant Tottenham job.

Potter has impressed since taking over at Brighton. The Seagulls are all but safe as their style of play under the Englishman has caught the eye.

Pochettino took over at Spurs in 2014 after he spent just over a year with Southampton. Murphy has told talkSPORT that Tottenham should go for Potter next:

“I understand [the link] because of the way Brighton play.

“Similarly we were talking off air about when Tottenham brought in Pochettino. He’d only been at Southampton for five minutes before they took him. So they could go down that route again. It might surprise one or two.

“Tottenham fans generally want someone who has been there and done it before, but they’ve just gone down that road and it didn’t work. So I’m not surprised he [Potter] is linked with the job, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson suggested if Mikel Arteta left Arsenal tomorrow, he would pick Potter as his replacement. He also called for Tottenham to go for him:

“I will put my neck on the line here, I would take him at Tottenham. I will tell you what, if Arteta left tomorrow morning, I would take him at Arsenal, if Arteta left tomorrow.”
