Happy Star Wars day everybody! But perhaps more importantly, the Astros come to town with fans in the stands for the first time since Houston’s sign-stealing scandal was uncovered. If the reception during batting practice is any indication of what’s to come, the Astros are in for a loud and hostile three game series in The Bronx.
Domingo Germán takes the mound for the Yankees, and he will look to build upon a strong previous two starts. He went six and seven innings respectively, giving up only two earned runs total while striking out six in each outing. It is encouraging to see him go deeper into games, as the bullpen has already been heavily leaned upon through the first month. On the year, Germán is 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA, 4.41 FIP, and 19 strikeouts in 20 innings.
His opponent will be the current ace of Astros staff, Zack Greinke. The future Hall of Famer has been typically excellent through his first six starts, logging a 3.44 ERA, 3.98 FIP, and 27 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. He won’t blow hitters away at this point in his career, but he throws as many as seven different pitches, with a range in velocity from 90 mph to 51 mph.
The Yankees send out their A-lineup for this Tuesday evening encounter. Giancarlo Stanton remains batting second, while Kyle Higashioka continues his run of starts. Gleyber Torres and Clint Frazier showed signs that their bats were starting to heat up over the weekend, but the Tigers’ pitching staff and the Astros’ pitching staff are two entirely different animals.
The Astros’ lineup is as formidable as ever, especially with Yordan Alvarez’s recent return. Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Yuli Gurriel, and Carlos Correa are the remaining players from the sign-stealing era (at least, if you believe the results of the MLB investigation), so expect each to receive a hearty share of boos and heckling each time they step into the box.
