Instant Celebrity proved herself one of the star fillies of the season after she put paid to the older sprinting mares in style when a convincing winner of the group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday.
Having just her second run from a spell after announcing herself as a rare prospect in the spring carnival in Melbourne, Instant Celebrity was given a dream ride from Craig Williams, who saved every inch of ground to eventually enjoy a half length margin on the line.
Trainer Phillip Stokes said he was thrilled to see his filly live up to expectations and for Craig Williams to ride her so faultlessly after being luckless in the spring on her in the Thousand Guineas when she finished third.
“A great thrill and a great team effort,” Stokes said. “Craig Williams, what a ride. He never went around a horse.”
Starting at $9, Instant Celebrity beat the Chris Waller-trained Subpoenaed ($9.50) with Rubisaki ($14) finished on strongly for third place.
Williams said he had no doubt Instant Celebrity was just that after the win.
“It’s great to see her win her first Group 1 at just her seventh start,” Williams said. “She is going to be an exciting horse for years to come.”
