Major League Baseball has placed Hall of Fame second baseman Roberto Alomar on the ineligible list and terminated him from his role as a league consultant following the completion of an investigation into sexual miconduct allegations levied against Alomar. The Blue Jays, for whom Alomar played five of his 17 major league seasons, expressed support for the decision and are severing all ties with Alomar. His name will be removed from the team’s “Level of Excellence” and his banner at Rogers Centre will be taken down.

Alomar will be the only Hall of Famer on the ineligible list, which bars him from working in Major League Baseball. The Hall’s leadership expressed sadness about Alomar’s alleged actions in a statement on Friday but announced that his plaque will remain on display in recognition of his on-field accomplishments.

Alomar released a statement on Twitter Friday, expressing disappointment at MLB’s decision and making a reference to “the current social climate” that is vague but often heard in situations like this as a celebrity tries to protect a crumbling reputation. Alomar did not directly deny the allegations but expressed a desire to publicly address them.

Alomar was a 12-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner, four-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and two-time World Series champion over 17 seasons with the Padres, Blue Jays, Orioles, Indians, Mets, White Sox, and Diamondbacks.
