Jurgen Klopp: “It wasn’t enough in the end”

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Marcelo Bielsa’s resurgent Leeds United side, a result which leaves a dent in their top four hopes. 

After the game, Jurgen Klopp spoke to Sky Sports about his side’s performance.

“I thought we did really well in the first a half but in the second half we didn’t play.”

Liverpool enjoyed the lion’s share of chances in an exciting first half. Early on, Fabinho squandered an excellent opportunity to open the lead, after a bursting run through Leeds’ defence. 

Shortly afterwards, Patrick Bamford had a golden chance of his own, but was impressively denied by an onrushing Alisson Becker.

The Reds did eventually take a lead on the half hour mark. After Diogo Jota brilliantly picked out Trent Alexander-Arnold, the fullback squared it for Sadio Mane to net his first goal in nine games.

“A brilliant ball from Thiago and then very good from Trent. I was never in doubt.” 

Despite dominating early on in the second half, the hosts began to grow into the game, with great opportunities for Patrick Bamford, Tyler Roberts and Jack Harrison going amiss. 

That pressure finally payed off with three minutes left to play, after Diego Llorente headed home his first goal for Leeds. Despite late pressure from the visitors, they eventually succumbed to a frustrating, yet probably deserved, draw. 

“Ali had to make a couple of saves. We defended deeper but we should have used 1/2 of our chances. We didn’t finish it. It wasn’t enough in the end.”
