It’s difficult to find any subject that essentially unites fans across the board, but the top European soccer clubs managed to do just that with Sunday’s announcement of a breakaway Super League.

Basically, every fan hates the idea.

The Super League, which was explained here by Nate Scott, would drastically shake up the entire structure of major European soccer. It would line the pockets of billionaire owners, upend tradition and negatively impact competition in domestic leagues. None of that sounds fun unless you’re a billionaire owner of a major soccer club.

Liverpool was set to be the first Super League participant in action since Sunday’s announcement, and supporters of both Liverpool and Leeds showed up at Elland Road to protest the Super League idea.

This was the scene as the Liverpool team bus arrived at Elland Road.

Leeds United — a newly promoted club that would be left out of the Super League like all the other mid-table teams not named Arsenal — also took a shot at the Super League news with the tarps draped over the still-empty stands.

“Earn it on the pitch. Football is for the fans,” the tarp read, referencing how the Super League would ruin the performance-driven structure of present European soccer.

Leeds players warmed up in shirts with the same message.

With news that UEFA is considering eliminating three of the four Champions League semifinalists (Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City) this week, the Super League drama is only going to get worse.
