BREAKING: Liverpool Make Super League Statement

In what has long been discussed, the Super League is official. The league founders made the announcement in a statement this evening. In a joint statement made by each of the twelve clubs, it announced each of the teams as well as the hope of having discussions with FIFA and UEFA. 

“Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.”

Super League Founding Clubs

Liverpool, are just one of the twelve and counting clubs to announce that they have come established a new mid-week competition, the Super League. 

“AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as Founding Clubs. It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.”

While many have spoken out against the Super League, the statement says that the Super League founders will continue to work with FIFA and UEFA.

“Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.”

Super League Format

The statement reveals that it the competition will be made up of 20 clubs with 15 of those being the ‘Founding Clubs’ listed above. While the Founding Clubs will be guaranteed a place in the competition, the other five teams will qualify, “based on achievements in the prior season.”

Whenever the league does start, it will be in August. The format will be two groups of ten with each team playing one another in both home and away matches. The top three will automatically qualify for the quarter finals of the competition but the fourth and fifth placed clubs will play in a two-legged play off to secure the remaining spots. 

The statement claims that the league will begin as soon as it is practicable to do so and that a women’s league will also be launched. 

Financial Details

Like everything in modern football, you need to follow the money. The statement announced that this competition will provide a much larger financial package to the clubs involved than the current Champions League or Europa League competitions. 

The statement claims that the ‘solidarity payments’ are “expected to be in excess of €10 billion.” The Founding Clubs will all receive a massive initial payment of €3.5 billion to help them with their plans amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
