Tony Finau moves into contention at PGA just 3 shots off the lead after shooting 67

SALT LAKE CITY — Tony Finau has made a habit of contending at major golf tournaments and he’s doing it again this week at the PGA Championship in San Francisco.

The Salt Lake City native fired a 3-under-par 67 at TPC Harding Park Saturday and moved up into a tie for seventh place, just three shots off the lead held by Dustin Johnson.

Finau, who started with rounds of 67 and 70, got to 3-under in a hurry Saturday with birdies at 4, 6 and 7. He made bogeys at holes 9 and 12, but also added birdies at 10 and 17, where he sank a 50-footer to get back to 3-under on the day.

Last year, Finau finished in the top five at both the Masters, where he tied for fifth, and the Open Championship, where he finished third. In 2018, he had three top 10 finishes at majors with a tie for 10th at the Masters, fifth place at the U.S. Open and a tie for ninth at the Open Championship. His best finish at the PGA came back in 2015 when he tied for 10th place.

For Sunday’s final round, Finau will tee off in the fourth-to-last group with fellow long-hitter Bryson DeChambeau.
