  • West Ham fans reacted in horror on social media as the Hammers imploded in five first-half minutes away at Newcastle to go two goals and a man down at half-time.

David Moyes’ side were heading into half-time goalless against the Magpies before Issa Diop’s own goal was quickly followed by Craig Dawson’s red card for hacking down Joelinton in the build-up – which earned him a second booking.

A few minutes later, Lukasz Fabianski dropped a corner into the path of Joelinton who doubled Newcastle’s lead to give West Ham an uphill struggle for the second-half, with their fans angrily revealing that their slide was ’embarrassing’.

The Hammers did manage to haul themselves level due to goals from Diop and a Jesse Lingard penalty but the visitors conceded two minutes after equalising through Joe Willock’s goal.

One furious fan tweeted: ‘F*** off West Ham, what an embarrassing result. Well done Dawson, Diop and Fabianski’

Another Hammers fan said: ‘Can never take the West Ham out of West Ham can you?! F*** sake if that is how we play against a championship quality side then maybe it’s good we don’t travel to Barcelona next year. It would be embarrassing #westham’

Meanwhile, one West Ham fan posted: ‘Top 4 chances ruined we couldn’t have bottled this any more tbh embarrassing’

Craig Dawson was then sent off for a second yellow picked up in the build-up to Newcastle’s first goal

Another claimed: ‘It’s gone for me. We were awful attacking before the sending off. Hope the goal difference doesn’t take a bartering.’

Other fans were calmer in their mood at half-time but still showed emotions of deep disappointment after their collapse.

One fan tweeted: ‘2 massive errors. Sloppy passing. Need to have more urgency and stop giving the ball away cheaply.

Another said: ‘Only West Ham can have a team create 0 meaningful chances and still be up 2-0.’

One Hammers fan claimed: ‘Got what we deserved from that half. So many individuals mistakes from first minute. Both goals calamities of multiple errors. Character test second half’

Former West Ham striker Carlton Cole admitted his frustration at the Hammers’ poor first-half display at Newcastle.

Cole told Sky Sports: ‘We were not on the front foot, we were second to everything. We’re shaky and shipping too many goals at the back.

‘What we need to understand is that we can’t always outscore other teams. Sometimes you need to shut off the team that’s trying to attack you and be more compact.

‘They look disjointed. We knew that Saint-Maximin was going to come out guns blazing because he’s had a good couple of games beforehand. We didn’t handle him and I’m really disappointed.

‘I knew that this was going to happen at some stage, that we were going to lose points, but I thought it would be a little bit further down (the line).’

Graeme Souness, meanwhile, hit out at Hammers goalkeeper Fabianksi for dropping the simple corner to double Newcastle’s lead.

He added: ‘It’s Keystone Cops stuff, both goals. It’s a calamity (the second goal), it’s not a difficult catch, he sees the ball coming all the way, there aren’t too many bodies in his way.

‘It’s just poor goalkeeping – but to be fair, he’s had a good season. It can happen to anyone but it’s happened at a bad time, when you’re 1-0 down.’

The Hammers went into the game in control of their top-four hopes, lying one point ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea with seven Premier League matches to play.

Moyes’ side knew that defeat at St James’ Park could see both Chelsea and Liverpool overtake them in the Premier League table before the end of the weekend should both sides pick up victories.
