Opportunity with Sox knocks for Williams

After splitting last season between the Phillies and Reds and not appearing in a major-league game, Nick Williams signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox in mid-January.

“They reached out,” said Williams, a 27-year old outfielder. “I looked at the team and I wanted to not just be part of a team I thought had the best chance, but a winning team. When you have a team that just goes out there to win and plays hard, it’s something great to be a part of.”

Injuries to Eloy Jimenez, Adam Engel and Billy Hamilton opened an outfield spot, and Williams joined the Sox last Thursday and was in the starting lineup for the home opener.

“I think the opportunity is to do whatever I can to help the team win,” said Williams, who had 17 home runs and 50 RBI over 140 games with Philadelphia in 2018. “I try to stay simple, not do too much and try to take it one step at a time. Also, not forget to have fun.”
