Patrick Surtain II would ‘intrigue’ Giants at No. 11

The New York Giants are doing extensive work on edge rushers and wide receivers ahead of the 2021 NFL draft, but there are other positions they could turn to at No. 11 overall depending on what shakes out in front of them.

In the unlikely scenario someone like Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II slips past the Dallas Cowboys at No. 10, the Giants could deviate from their intended plan.

“The one outsider from a different position — and I know they just signed Adoree’ Jackson but you can never have enough good cornerbacks in this league — if Patrick Sutrain is there at 11, from what I understand, that is a name that could intrigue them as well,” ESPN’s Jordan Raanan said on the “Breaking Big Blue” podcast.

Surtain is widely considered a top 10 pick and very rarely falls further in most mock drafts. He is frequently projected to go to Dallas, which would make sense based on their needs, but the pattern of the NFL draft is never a sure thing.

If there are a series of trades in the top 10 and someone offers Dallas a King’s ransom for their pick, perhaps there’s an outside chance Surtain does fall to the Giants. And if he does, do they pull the trigger? Again, that would likely depend on who else is available.

Still, like the position of wide receiver, you can never have enough quality depth. Should Jackson or James Bradberry suffer an injury at any point throughout the season, Surtain would provide a top-end security blanket. He would also make the Giants’ already stout secondary that much stronger, and who would argue against that in today’s NFL?
