England opener Jonny Bairstow came up with a big-hitting onslaught on Tuesday in Pune but he missed out on his 11th ODI hundred by just 6 runs. Bairstow took the India new-ball bowlers to the cleaners as he gave England the early advantage in their chase of 318 in the ODI series opener.

Jonny Bairstow is among the only 4 England batsmen who have scored 10 or more ODI hundreds. Test skipper Joe Root tops the list with 16 hundreds while Eoin Morgan has 13 and former opener Marcus Trescothik has 12.

Bairstow and his opener partners Jason Roy also equalled the record for the most number of 100-plus stands for England. The duo matches Eoin Morgan and Joe Root’s tally of 12 hundred-plus stands in the 50-over format when they hit 135 runs for the opening wicket on Tuesday.

Jonny Baristow was in imperious hitting form, taking the attack to young Prasidh Krishna who was playing his first-ever international match and Shardul Thakur in the powerplay.

Bairstow hit 2 sixes and as many boundaries in a costly 6th over bowled by Krishna. He then took the attack to Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya, hitting the two spinners out of the park with ease. Bairstow had hit 7 sixes and 6 boundaries before he got out to Shardul Thakur in the 25th over.

England raced to 89 for 0 at the end of 10 overs. The 135-run opening stand between Bairstow and Roy helped the visitors race to a strong start, putting pressure on Virat Kohli’s men. Bairstow was also prepared to play the waiting game as he curbed his attacking instincts after England lost Roy and Ben Stokes in quick succession.

The wicket of Bairstow came at the wrong time for England who were desperate for partnerships in the middle overs. Englnad were reduced to 176 for 5 with Shardul Thakur picking up 3 wickets and Krishna taking 2.
