5 Seconds of Summer star Michael Clifford has issued a grovelling apology on Twitter.

The guitarist, 24, apologised for offensive tweets in 2012 and he denied sex assault allegations which were swirling on social media.

Twitter users accused the boybander of writing sexist, misogynist jokes about women belonging in the kitchen in 2012 and homophobic tweets using the F-word.

Screenshots were circulating of what Michael was said to have written eight years ago.

In a stream of foul-mouthed tweets, the musician said sorry to his fans for what he had said in the past.

The guitarist urged he was a “different person now with a much better understanding of the world” in an apology to his 10.3million Twitter followers.

He wrote: “I am so sorry for hurting anyone. it was never my intention. I was so naive and I am embarrassed and I am beyond sorry. I will continue to be better and I will continue to change. I never want to hurt anyone again.

In a second tweet, he added: “hi. I am so f***ing sorry for all the dumb s*** I did when I was younger. I am a different person now with a much better understanding of the world.

“Some people have access to a digital megaphone a bit earlier than they should, unfortunately, I was one of them.”

But Michael hit back at sexual assault claims as he said the accusations were “beyond untrue”.

Wild Twitter users’ claims alleged the guitarist invited an underage fan to his hotel room after his band supported One Direction in 2014.

The 5 Seconds of Summer star shared his heartbreak at reading the accusations as he insisted he would “never do anything like that”.

He wrote: “holy s***. i am heartbroken to read these things that are being said – they are just BEYOND untrue.

“i was never allowed in the crowd i only ever watched at front of house – and i would’ve never EVER done that. i wouldf NEVER do anything like that. i’m so f***ing upset.”

Michael rocketed to fame as part of Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer which formed in 2011.
