5 things to do this weekend: Women Drummers of Rwanda, Rollergirls, Oktoberfest and more

Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area.

Though there’s never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we’ve chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Sept. 15-17.

Ingoma Nshya

WHERE: University of Georgia Performing Arts Center (250 River Rd.)

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. ($3 for K-12 students and $5 for adults)

DETAILS: Led by writer, performer and women’s rights advocate Kiki Katese, Ingoma Nshya is an eight-member singing and drumming chorus of women and girls from the central African country of Rwanda. Classic City Rollergirls

WHERE: Fun Galaxy Athens (3030 Cherokee Rd.)

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. ($12 admission)

DETAILS: For the final bout of the 2023 season, the Classic City Rollergirls (CCRG) will split off into two teams for a “Green vs. Black” competition that will see former CCRG players returning to join the fun. Drag For All

WHERE: Hendershot’s (237 Prince Ave.)

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 15 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ($5 admission, free for ages 12 and under)

DETAILS: This family-friendly “open drag night” hosted by Athens Showgirl Cabaret invites amateur drag performers to sign up by 7:30 p.m. the day of the show. Featured entertainers will include Kellie Divine, Sasha Stephens, Jenn Sparx, Freya Diva, Diego Wolf and more. For contact information, visit facebook.com/events/666062635056495.

Athens, Ga.-based Southern Brewing Company released ‘Back 2 Back’ IPA to celebrate UGA football’s two national titles. The brewery will be selling its Märzen Lager at their Oktoberfest event on Friday, Sept. 15.

WHERE: Southern Brewing Company (231 Collins Ind. Blvd.)

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: Southern Brewing Company’s annual Oktoberfest celebration will include their house-made Märzen Lager beer, and the special lineup of “festive entertainment” is set to include German-inspired food provided by The Yard Chef. Oktoberfest-appropriate attire such as Dirndl dresses and Lederhosen is welcome and encouraged.

Athens-Clarke County Library

Parachute Storytime

WHERE: Athens-Clarke County Library (2025 Baxter St.)

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: This program intended for children ages 2 to 5 will include story time, movement, songs, and a giant-sized rainbow parachute. The event is one of many regular programs hosted by the Athens-Clarke County Library Children’s Department. A current list can be found at athenslibrary.org/events.
