Ryan Williams is going to Alabama after all.
While the highly regarded wide receiver prospect previously decommitted from the Crimson Tide after head coach Nick Saban retired, he decided to join the SEC powerhouse’s recruiting class Wednesday, per Hayes Fawcett of On 3.
He chose Alabama over Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M.
Williams is a 5-star prospect and the No. 6 overall player and No. 3 wide receiver in the 2024 class, per 247Sports’ composite rankings.
His initial decommitment wasn’t his only move ahead of this decision, as he also reclassified to the 2024 class in December. He was initially part of the 2025 class.
That means the Crimson Tide will get to see what he can do on the field against SEC competition a year earlier than expected.
This is also a critical win for new head coach Kalen DeBoer. Saban’s retirement opened up a 30-day transfer window for players on the current roster, and many of the Crimson Tide’s best playmakers departed.
Safety Caleb Downs (Ohio State), quarterback Julian Sayin (Ohio State), offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor (Iowa) and wide receiver Isaiah Bond (Texas) were among the most notable players to head elsewhere.
While that will hurt the 2024 team, DeBoer’s ability to replace that type of talent in the coming years will ultimately determine whether he can keep Alabama operating at the same type of level it did for so long under Saban.
Williams is an example of the 5-star playmakers who Saban would consistently land on the recruiting trail.
He won the Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama in back-to-back years and brings game-changing speed on the outside to the table.
“Possessing a wiry frame at a shade over 6-feet and 165-pounds, the 5-star has drawn comparisons to former Heisman Trophy victor and Philadelphia Eagles WR DeVonta Smith due to his size in addition to his natural ability to create separation at any part of the field,” Gabe Brooks of 247Sports wrote.
“A smooth mover with elite verified speed, Williams chews up ground quickly, utilizing his speed, athleticism and body control to create leverage while maintaining the ability to change gears without any wasted motion.”
DeBoer will surely be able to make that work in his offense.
