49ers force Patriots to bench Newton on QB’s milestone day
Cam Newton accomplished something that no other player in NFL history has Sunday. But that will be overlooked when it’s all said and done.
The New England Patriots quarterback had a horrific game against the 49ers at Gillette Stadium, and was benched in the second half of San Francisco’s 33-6 win.
Newton completed 9 of 15 passes for 98 yards against the banged-up 49ers defense. He didn’t throw for any touchdowns and was intercepted three times. San Francisco sacked him once for 8 yards.
Newton entered the game needing just 88 passing yards to reach 30,000 for his career, and he was able to hit that. By doing so, he became the first quarterback in NFL history with 30,000 passing yards and 5,000 rushing yards in his career.
That’s an impressive feat for the former NFL MVP, but one he won’t care about, considering what happened in the game.

Newton had hoped to resurrect his career with the Patriots, but his last two games show there’s still a lot of work for Bill Belichick and his coaching staff to do.
