Middlesbrough College students hit the catwalk to raise funds for a local charity.

A group of 30 students aged 16 to 18 from the college’s fashion course staged the show to raise vital funds for Teesside Hospice. The event took place at the college, with fellow students helping with decorations, hair and makeup, catering and music.

Ans the evening raised more than £350 for the hospice, which supports people and families across Teesside who have been affected by a terminal illness. It also helped to raise the profile of the clothes on offer at Teesside Hospice shops across Teesside.

James Cameron, course coordinator for Fashion Business at Middlesbrough College, said: “This was a real team effort which involved over 100 students from right across the college. Teesside Hospice provided the fashion students with clothing for them to upcycle and make their own designs from.

“The students then used the skills they’ve learned on their courses to come up with their own creations but that was only the start of the process. They really took ownership of the event, designing the marketing materials and posters to advertise the show, and selling tickets to the event.

“We also had catering and hospitality students providing refreshments on the evening, art students designing the decoration, hair and makeup students doing the models’ hairstyles and makeup and music students providing the soundtrack for the show.”

Laura Pearn, Fashion Communication lecturer at Middlesbrough College, added: “The logistics involved in putting together and running a fashion show are not easy – you need to know how many models you need, the order they’re appearing in, how to co-ordinate the show with the music – but the students did so well.

“With them taking ownership of the event and doing everything associated with it, the show meant a lot more to them than if they had just taken part in someone else’s show. It was also great experience for them in their future careers.”
