3 takeaways from Baylor’s win over Iowa State: Scott Drew tossed in foul frenzy

Baylor #Baylor

Here are three takeaways from No. 18 Baylor’s wild finish against No. 12 Iowa State on Saturday night in the Foster Pavilion in Waco.

Things got ugly

After being assessed a technical foul in the first half, head coach Scott Drew was ejected with 11:25 to go in the second half, courtesy of a second tech. Baylor held a nine-point lead before the ejection and watched it dwindle away, as the Cyclones amassed a 20-0 run over the next 5:21.

The Bears held a 54-41 lead early in the second half, appearing as if they had control, but the game completely turned on its head as Baylor was called for 16 second-half fouls to Iowa State’s 10.

Got one back

Well, fourth time’s a charm?

After losing to Iowa State three times last season, Baylor finally got back in the win column. This is a series the Bears have recently dominated, as they entered the contest with a 14-6 edge since 2015.

This finish was wild, though. The Cyclones tied it with 10 seconds to go before Jayden Nunn made a go-ahead layup. Iowa State only had 1.2 seconds to work with, and Milan Momcilovic made a 3-pointer to win it, but the ball was still in his hands at the buzzer.

The Bears escaped with John Jakus as the interim head coach.

Gets even tougher

Saturday’s contest was just the beginning, as the Bears started a stretch of what’s currently four-straight games against AP Top 25 teams. The Cyclones were one of three teams in that span to be ranked in the top 15. Stretching that out even further, eight of Baylor’s next 10 opponents are ranked as of Saturday.

The going doesn’t get any easier in the Big 12, and the Bears will continue to have their hands full as the Big 12 Tournament looms.
