’21 Grams’ to ‘Walk the Line’: Memphis movie and TV walking tour planned in Central Gardens

Memphians are invited to visit Midtown locations associated with the likes of Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon and Sean Penn courtesy of a self-guided “Film & TV Walking Tour” organized by the Central Gardens Association that is set to run Saturday through May 2.
An interactive Google map that can be found at centralgardens.org/filmtour provides directions to the locations, which include 12 addresses on Carr, Willett, Cowden and Central Avenue, plus Elmwood Cemetery, as identified by the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission.
“Walk the Line” (2005) – The movie about the life of Johnny Cash featured Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon received five Oscar nominations. Witherspoon won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

The homes — mostly built during the first three decades of the 20th century in the historic Central Gardens neighborhoods — were showcased in several made-in-Memphis productions. These include the campus comedy “Making the Grade” (1984), with Judd Nelson; director Sydney Pollack’s John Grisham adaptation, “The Firm” (1993), with Tom Cruise; “21 Grams,” with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, directed by future two-time Best Picture Oscar-winner Alejandro González Iñárritu; the Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line” (2005), which earned Oscars nominations for Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon (who won the Best Actress award); the Craig Brewer-produced MTV horror thriller “Savage County” (2010); the Hallmark Channel’s “Christmas at Graceland” (2018) and its sequels; and the 2019 NBC legal drama “Bluff City Law,” with Jimmy Smits.

The tour is free, but participants are encouraged to consider making a donation to the Central Gardens Association, which hosts a variety of preservation and restoration projects.
