Game of Thrones quickly established itself as one of the best fantasy television shows of all time, and this was largely thanks to the exceptional actors who brought its compelling characters to life. Despite being a member of the largely antagonistic House Lannister, Tyrion became a fan favorite through his sharp wit and impressive intellect.

Fans were also drawn to Tyrion through sympathy. He endured a lot in life, from ridicule and prejudice to straight-up violence, both before and throughout Game of Thrones. Part of Tyrion’s backstory came from how his family had once set up a fake scenario, where he fell in love with and married a woman named Tysha, before revealing it to be staged. This was referenced in Game of Thrones, but this hardship would be added to by many others in the show.

Tyrion Was Consistently Humiliated By His Family

Tyrion had to endure endless humiliation and torment at the hands of many people in Game of Thrones, but his family members were certainly the worst for it. While Tywin and Cersei openly despised him, Joffrey became insufferable towards his uncle as soon as he became king.

Before then, Tyrion had always put Joffrey in his place, but with his newfound power, Joffrey got his revenge. He would seek to humiliate Tyrion whenever he could, whether at Tyrion’s wedding to Sansa or at his own wedding reception when he destroyed Tyrion’s gifted book with his new Valyrian steel sword.

Tyrion Had To Endure The Hatred And Disrespect Of His Father Tywin

Tyrion became accustomed to ridicule from almost everybody throughout Game of Thrones, but the one person’s hatred that stung him was that of his father, Tywin Lannister. Tywin only cared about his family’s legacy, and he always felt that Tyrion was a detriment to the Lannister name.

Tywin would gladly put Tyrion in harm’s way, and only sought to rescue him if there was a consequential risk to the family’s reputation. When Tywin’s forces began to fight against Robb Stark, he sent Tyrion with his new tribesmen allies, even though Tyrion had very little battle experience. Tyrion miraculously survived, but it didn’t change the fact that his father had knowingly put him in danger.

Tyrion Was Deemed Responsible For The Attempt On Bran’s Life

Game of Thrones started at a considerable pace considering the characters were still being introduced and fleshed out. The end of Episode 1, “Winter is Coming,” had Jaime Lannister pushing young Bran Stark out of a Winterfell Tower after he had seen Jaime and Cersei together.

Bran was then targeted by a mysterious figure known as the catspaw assassin, only to be thwarted by Catelyn Stark and the direwolf Summer. An investigation led Catelyn to believe that the assassin’s dagger belonged to Tyrion. However, Tyrion had been set up. He was falsely accused and taken to the Eyrie where he eventually won his trial. This wasn’t even the last time Tyrion was treated like a criminal when he hadn’t done anything wrong.

Tyrion Was Falsely Accused Of Joffrey’s Murder

Game of Thrones had many satisfying and karmic deaths that came for despicable characters, and Joffrey’s was one of the most highly-anticipated. The horrific boy-king had done nothing but torment everybody with a brattish arrogance and eventually met his end at his own wedding feast.

Joffrey had been persistently taunting and chastising Tyrion, so when he choked to death, his final action was to point at his uncle as the culprit. Although Tyrion hated his nephew for the tyrant he was, he had played no part in Joffrey’s murder. Still, Cersei and Tywin pushed for him to go to trial and even killed for this crime he didn’t commit.

Tyrion Suffered The Ultimate Betrayal During An Already-Farcical Trial

This farcical trial was a turning point for Tyrion in Game of Thrones. Everybody who was called to the stand used evidence that was either taken out of context or fabricated entirely. Tyrion was losing hope and his patience, but when his former lover Shae arrived to betray his trust and stand against him, Tyrion was distraught.

This betrayal broke Tyrion. He proceeded to lose his cool, demanding a trial by combat. Tyrion had been ridiculed and teased his entire life, but this slander and betrayal pushed him over the edge, as it drew various parallels with the previous Tysha ordeal.

Tyrion Was Antagonized Into Killing His Former Lover And Father

Tyrion was one of Game of Thrones’ most sympathetic characters. While this was mainly because of the hardships and tribulations he faced, he was also forced to do some pretty bad things. Being wrongly accused of Joffrey’s murder and subsequently sentenced to death by his own family pushed Tyrion over the edge.

When Tyrion’s brother Jaime and his friend Varys helped him escape, Tyrion went to confront his father. However, he found his former love Shae lying in Tywin’s bed. This broke Tyrion’s heart further, and his rage drove him to kill her. Tyrion also killed his father, unleashing years of pent-up resentment and hate. Tyrion’s family and loved ones betrayed him and had ultimately sent him down this path.

Tyrion’s Journey To Meeting Daenerys Targaryen Was Traumatic

Season 5 of Game of Thrones commenced with Tyrion a changed man. He had just killed his father and was being cooped up in a crate for the long voyage to Essos. Tyrion’s actions forced him to leave his home for a foreign land, knowing that Cersei would be sending people after him.

When Tyrion was eventually captured, it wasn’t by anyone sent at Cersei’s behest. Instead, it was by the disgraced Jorah Mormont. Jorah sought to regain favor with Daenerys by offering Tyrion to her, but they both ended up being captured by slavers. This traumatic journey saw Tyrion abducted, attacked by Stone Men, witnessing a dragon for the first time, and then being sold into slavery before finding himself in Meereen.

Ser Mandon Moore Tried To Kill Tyrion And Left Him Scarred

The defense of King’s Landing at the Battle of the Blackwater was one of Tyrion Lannister’s most triumphant achievements in Game of Thrones. However, he would receive none of the public credit due to his father Tywin’s emphatic arrival. Things got even worse for Tyrion, as Ser Mandon Moore tried to kill him. Moore slashed across Tyrion’s face but was killed by Tyrion’s loyal friend Podrick Payne before he could kill Tyrion.

Tyrion suspected Cersei to have employed the services of Ser Mandon to finish him off, but Joffrey and Littlefinger also seemed likely culprits. Tyrion woke up with a deep scar on his face, stripped of his title as Hand of the King, and moved to much smaller chambers.

Tyrion Had To Betray His Friend Varys

Throughout Game of Thrones, Tyrion Lannister saw awful things happen to him or was pushed to do awful things. One of the most tragic events was the death of his friend Varys.

When Varys betrayed Daenerys and plotted to push Jon Snow as the new ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, Tyrion reluctantly told his queen. Daenerys had once pledged to burn Varys alive if he ever betrayed her, and that is exactly what she did. Tyrion would feel that guilt for the remainder of Game of Thrones, especially when he realized that Varys was right all along.

Tyrion’s Faith In Daenerys Had Gone Up In Flames And He Was Arrested

Throughout Game of Thrones, everything that happened to Tyrion led to him serving Daenerys as she sought to take the Iron Throne. The final war to ensure this happened led Tyrion to fight against his family, but he still saw it as the right thing to do.

When Daenerys lost control and burned everything in King’s Landing, Tyrion resigned as Hand of the Queen, with Daenerys immediately arresting him. Tyrion had sacrificed everything to get to this position and Daenerys had ripped away any lingering hope that he had, showing that his loyalty had all been for naught.
