Manchester United have “identified” Dan Ashworth as their primary target for sporting director.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Tuesday that the Newcastle supremo is the Old Trafford club’s firm favourite.
According to the report, Ashworth is thought to be open to the prospect of joining the Red Devils despite being contracted to St James’ Park.
The 52-year-old was installed as the Magpies’ sporting director in June 2022 after developing a burgeoning reputation at Brighton and in the England setup.
United’s interest in Ashworth emerged just hours after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to secure 25% ownership was ratified by the Premier League.
The INEOS founder struck a deal of £1.25bn for his shareholding, which is expected to see him handed total autonomy over the club’s football operations.
