City showed their title credentials for the first time since the World Cup by pulling off a fantastic comeback victory over Antonio Conte’s side.
City were made to pay for a subdued first half on the brink of half-time as a bad giveaway at the back led to an easy strike for Dejan Kulusevski to snatch a lead for Tottenham.
Moments later, disaster struck again for City as Emerson Royal nodded home a rebounded shout to double Spurs’ advantage.
But a remarkable comeback from Pep Guardiola’s men turned the result around and potentially breathed new life into their title challenge.
Julián Álvarez stabbed home to cut the deficit in half within six minutes of the interval before Erling Haaland headed home a Mahrez header moments later to equalise, and set the Etihad alight.
The comeback was complete for City just past the hour mark when Riyad Mahrez scored a superb solo goal to snatch the lead for the Champions.
City were made to sweat in the end as Spurs upped their push for an equaliser but Mahrez got in behind the Spurs defence and chipped Hugo Lloris to drive the final nail in the Tottenham coffin.
City move to within five points of league leaders Arsenal while Spurs now lie in fifth, five points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United who have a game in hand.
