St James’ Park is the venue for Saturday’s final Premier League fixture, rounding off an absorbing opening day.

Newcastle v Aston Villa

Scorers: Tonali 6′, Isak 16′; Diaby 11′

Sandro Tonali started in midfield for his full Newcastle debut, while Villa summer signing Moussa Diaby was on the wing, with defender Pau Torres on the bench.

And Tonali wasted no time introducing himself to his new club, with a debut goal in the sixth minute. Just after Bruno Guimarães had forced Emi Martínez into a good save, Anthony Gordon lifted a cross into the box and the Italian midfielder swept home to lift the roof off St James’ Park.

Moments later Tonali had another chance when he was played through on goal but this time Martínez came to the rescue, before Diaby forced Nick Pope into a save following a counter-attack at the other end.

Villa were soon level and it was Diaby who found the net on his debut, when he finished cleverly past a motionless Pope after Ollie Watkins had flicked a cross into the Frenchman’s path.

The two sides weren’t level for long however, with Alexander Isak soon firing Newcastle back in front from Dan Burn’s knockdown.

Villa were then dealt a blow when they lost Tyrone Mings to what appeared to be a knee injury, enabling Torres to come off the bench for his debut.

Bowen’s arrow only enough for a draw at Bournemouth

Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth tenure officially began with a hard fought draw with West Ham.

Tomáš Souček thought he’d given West Ham the lead after 16 minutes, but his header came back off the post and into the grateful grasp of Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto.

The Hammers did get their noses in front early in the second half courtesy of a brilliant goal from Jarrod Bowen. From 25 yards the forward found the top corner with a superb left-footed curler.

The Cherries got themselves back on level terms with eight minutes of normal time remaining, when Dominic Solanke rounded Alphonse Areola to score after Antoine Semenyo’s mis-hit shot had landed perfectly at the striker’s feet.

Luton lose at Brighton on Premier League debut

Luton Town’s first ever Premier League fixture ended in defeat, with a pair of Brighton summer signings scoring on their debuts for the club.

Debutant João Pedro should have given Brighton an early lead when he was found by a Pascal Groß cross, but somehow the Brazilian fluffed his finish.

The Seagulls did break the deadlock nine minutes before half-time when Solly March headed home from Kaoru Mitoma’s excellent cross.

The second goal came midway through the second half and it was scored from the penalty spot by Pedro on his debut after he had been brought down in the box by Tom Lockyer.

Luton were then handed a lifeline when they were also awarded a penalty for a Lewis Dunk handball. Carlton Morris stepped up and rolled home the Hatters’ first ever Premier League goal.

But the hosts soon re-established their two-goal lead when Luton were unable to clear their lines, and substitute Simon Adingra rattled in a debut goal.

And in stoppage time, substitute Evan Ferguson put the icing on the cake with a tap in for 4-1.

Toffees lament missed chances in opening day defeat

Despite creating numerous chances to score, Everton’s season began with a defeat at home to Fulham.

Abdoulaye Doucouré had a great chance to give Everton an early lead when he found himself through on goal, but Bernd Leno came to Fulham’s rescue with a good save.

The Toffees then had a goal disallowed when Michael Keane had the ball in the net, but James Tarkowski was penalised for a foul on Leno.

Into the second half and Raúl Jiménez went close to a debut goal for Fulham when he hit the post on the volley.

Nathan Patterson then missed a great chance to score for Everton when he could only hit the crossbar from close range after Leno had pushed Alex Iwobi’s shot into the goalmouth.

And the hosts were made to rue that miss when Fulham substitute Bobby Decordova-Reid broke the deadlock, tapping in at the back post from Andreas Pereira’s inventive cross.

Moments after Fulham were appealing for a penalty for an alleged Tarkowski handball, the Everton captain went agonisingly close to a 90th-minute equaliser, but his header went just wide of the far post.

Blades beaten on top flight return

Sheffield United were quickly reminded of the difficulty of the Premier League with an opening day defeat to Crystal Palace.

Jordan Ayew thought he’d opened the scoring midway through the first half at Bramall Lane, but the Palace striker’s header was ruled out for offside.

Palace did go in front early in the second half and Odsonne Édouard was the scorer, with a quick reaction to stab home Ayew’s cross from the byline.

Saka scores stunner as Arsenal begin with a win

Arsenal made a winning start to the new season but were made to sweat by a spirited Nottingham Forest performance.

Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurriën Timber made their Premier League debuts for Arsenal, while former Gunners goalkeeper Matt Turner started for Forest.

But kick-off at the Emirates Stadium was delayed by 30 minutes due to an issue with the turnstiles.

When the game eventually did begin, the first big chance fell to Forest when Brennan Johnson found himself clean through on goal, but the striker rushed his finish and put it high and wide.

Arsenal had been knocking on the door and they opened the scoring in the 26th minute, when Eddie Nketiah fired past Turner with the aid of a deflection after a brilliant pirouette from Gabriel Martinelli.

Arsenal suffered a blow early in the second half when debutant Timber was forced off with an injury. Takehiro Tomiyasu came on to replace the Dutchman.

Rice then went close to a debut goal in the 76th minute with a low strike from outside the box which Turner had to tip onto the post. At the other end, Willy Boly had the chance to head in from a corner, but the Forest defender couldn’t get a good connection on the ball and Aaron Ramsdale dealt with it comfortably.

Forest did then pull a goal back when Anthony Elanga came off the bench for his debut and soon assisted fellow substitute Taiwo Awoniyi after a brilliant run to set up a nervy finish.

But despite more than seven minutes of stoppage time, the hosts held on for the three points.
